What causes Laugh Lines?
Laugh lines can discourage even the most positive person. These lines are annoying wrinkles and fine lines which develop over time. These lines/wrinkles usually develop in the forehead, the lip area, and the area between the cheek and nose extending to the chin called the nasolabial folds. Laugh lines can be caused by many factors both intrinsic and extrinsic. Factors of course include age, genetics, lack of good skin care using sun screen and moisturizers, smoking, excessive exposure to the sun and weight loss.
There are many treatments for laugh lines ranging from creams and products for the minimal cases to dermal fillers and laser resurfacing for the more severe cases. Some people will even opt for plastic surgery. Most do not want anything as invasive as surgery, however.
Dermal fillers are usually hyaluronic acid or collagen based. These are natural components in connective tissue so will absorb nicely over time. If you are a candidate for dermal fillers then there are many to choose from and different types for each area. For example, Restylane, Juvederm, or Radiesse will help nicely for those pesky nasolabial folds as well as the jowls. In the thinner areas of the face such as around the lips, Belotero or Restylane Defyne or Refyne can be used. Botox (botulin) can be used for some of the finer lines and wrinkles as well.
Tightening of the area as well as resurfacing may help as well. Thermage is a very good way to help the sagging skin in the neck, face, and jowls. This in turn, will help the lines and wrinkles. Thermage uses radiofrequency producing electrical currents which stimulate the collagen and retraction in your skin. Thermage will continue to show improved results normally over the next few months post treatment. This can be done with no down time for the patient so it is very convenient.
Laser skin resurfacing is something many patients opt for as it will help with not only fine lines and wrinkles but laxity and sun damage as well as acne scars. Laser skin resurfacing uses a laser concentrated energy to decrease the areas of concern including pigmentation. This can sometimes take more than one treatment. Laser resurfacing will in time, improve the look and feel of the skin as well as help in building collagen.
It is always important to meet with your dermatologist to decide which treatment options are better for you!
