What causes Lip Lines?
Lip lines are as annoying as facial laugh lines but not to be confused with one another. These two are totally different. Lip lines develop vertically around the lips (perioral). These lines normally stretch from the lip toward the nose vertically. Trying to conceal them with makeup actually makes them seem darker. Many times they are also referred to as “smoker’s lines” or “lipstick lines”.
These lines are common and a very natural part of aging. However, many people tend to “help them along in development” by smoking, using a straw, puckering a lot, and not using sunscreen. This is also a normal part of aging and become darker, deeper, and more pronounced over time.
There are many treatment options for lip lines. These can include topical creams, which normally do nothing at all, to injections, laser treatments, and resurfacing.
The most effective treatment option is using injections which include dermal fillers (hyaluronic acid) such as Restylane, Belotero, and Juvederm. Neurotoxins to aid in relaxing the movement of the area include Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are also used.
Other treatment options can include laser resurfacing to remove the top layer of skin, chemical peel to remove the top layer of skin, Microdermabrasion which can promote the same result as a mild chemical peel, and Microneedling procedure to help reduce the fine lines and stimulate collagen growth in the area.
It is always best to meet with your dermatologist to discuss your treatment options and what may give you the best result.
