What is Actinic Keratosis?
Actinic Keratosis(es) (AK), also called Solar Keratosis, form on skin which soaks up a lot of sun (ultraviolet light) or using a tanning bed over a period of years.
It forms as a rough, dry, scaly patch on the skin. As a person ages, the skin does not repair itself as it did when we were younger. Over time, the damage will accumulate and we will then see a UV damaged type area.
This then creates AK’s. An AK can become cancerous in the future so it is usually removed with simple procedures such as freezing (most common), tissue scraping and photodynamic therapy. It is recommended the patient is followed by a dermatologist regularly for skin checks.
