What causes Oily Skin?

Oily skin tends to be a nuisance more than anything but can lead to acne if not taken care of properly. Oily skin usually occurs due to coarse pores, overproduction of sebum from the sebaceous glands, diet, hormones/hormonal changes, cosmetics used, humidity/hot weather and vitamin B12 deficiency.

It is important the patient invest in healthier eating such as high protein with restriction in sugar and salt and plenty of leafy green vegetables. Always drink plenty of water! Reduce the amount of fat in your diet.

The most effective way to manage oily skin is by washing your face both morning and evening. Using a cleanser with a type of benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid is recommended if a basic face cleanser is not working. Do not use harsh chemicals on your face or heavy cosmetics. This will only increase the oily production and can cause acne. It is better to discuss these options with your dermatologist.

Treatment options if this turns into acne can include PDT Acne laser or light treatment. Again, this would be something your dermatologist would discuss with you during your consultation.
