What are stretch marks?
Stretch marks are striae (lesions) that are usually long and narrow, resembling stripes or lines on the skin. They usually appear red or purple in tint and fade over time into white or silvery lines. They can also have a different texture than the surrounding skin.
What causes stretch marks?
Anyone can develop stretch marks at any age. They result from a constant “tearing” or stretching in the skin layers during certain changes in the body. Pregnancy, significant weight gain, and substantial muscle growth are the most common causes of stretch marks. However, they can also occur during puberty or as a side effect of some illnesses, including diabetes and Cushing’s disease.
What are the best treatments for stretch marks?
Treating stretch marks as early as possible is key as the skin is more prepared to respond during the early stages of change. Your dermatologist will recommend the best approach for you, from topical products to laser treatments.
Topical Products
Retinol products and collagen-stimulating gels work to minimize stretch marks over time. Your dermatologist will recommend the best over-the-counter products and prescription-strength treatments for you.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion exfoliates away the outer layers of your skin, removing some of the cells affected by stretch marks. This treatment involves little to no downtime but typically requires several sessions.
Chemical Peels
These blends of chemical exfoliants peel away the top layers of the skin to reveal the fresh and healthy skin underneath. Downtime for chemical peels varies depending on the depth and aggression of each peel.
SkinPen® Microneedling
This treatment creates tiny punctures in the skin, spurring on your body’s natural healing response and boosting collagen production for a smoother skin surface. Microneedling typically involves a couple of days of skin healing.
V-Beam Perfecta®
The V-Beam Perfecta pulsed dye laser breaks up pigmentation in the skin to minimize red or purple pigmentation. Most people need 2 to 4 sessions. This treatment is comfortable to undergo and requires little to no downtime.
Fraxel®
Fraxel laser skin resurfacing stimulates new collagen production to create a more even surface and address pigmentation. Expect a few days of downtime as your skin heals from this effective treatment.
