BOTOX® Cosmetic

Every time we smile, squint, or frown, our facial muscles contract, causing the skin to crease and wrinkle. Over time, as the skin loses its elasticity, these lines become etched in the skin. Frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead wrinkles can age your face and project a sad or angry appearance. Women and men choose BOTOX® Cosmetic at our Houston-area dermatology offices as a way to easily refresh their look and take years off their appearance.

In addition to the widely known BOTOX, our locations also offer Dysport®, XEOMIN®, and Jeuveau™. These types of wrinkle-relaxing products can smooth out troublesome lines and make your skin look naturally younger.

What Is BOTOX Cosmetic?

BOTOX is an injectable treatment that reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It relaxes the tiny facial muscles that form “dynamic wrinkles” each time you frown, smile, or squint. By preventing these muscle contractions, the skin lays smooth and lines and wrinkles fade, making your features look softer and more youthful.

BOTOX is a versatile product and can be used on many different areas. A few popular choices include:

  • Crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes
  • Horizontal forehead wrinkles
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows (the “11s”)
  • “Smoker’s lines” around the lips
  • Platysmal muscle bands (vertical) visible on the neck

How Does BOTOX Work?

BOTOX, and similar anti-wrinkle injectables, use an active ingredient called botulinum. This neurotoxic protein is injected into specific facial muscles and causes them to temporarily relax. Using a very small needle and expert precision, our injectors target areas where your wrinkles are most noticeable. We are always careful to create flattering, natural-looking results that don’t appear “overdone” or “frozen.” The procedure typically lasts 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the number of areas you’re treating.

BOTOX vs. Dermal Fillers

Many patients benefit by combining BOTOX with dermal filler injections. Dermal fillers can treat “static wrinkles,” which are permanent lines caused by age, sun damage, and loss of skin volume. By combining BOTOX and fillers to soften wrinkles and plump up the skin, you can achieve more comprehensive results.

BOTOX Cosmetic

Can be used to lift the brow or corners of the upper lip (a “lip flip”)

Results last about 3 to 4 months

No downtime

Dermal Fillers

Effectively treats static wrinkles

Adds volume or definition and contours to specific areas of the face

Can be used to augment thin lips or to add volume to “tear troughs” under the eyes

Results last between 6 and 18 months, depending on the filler used

No downtime

What Is BOTOX Recovery Like?

There is no downtime required after BOTOX, so you can return to work or home immediately afterward. Your results will gradually develop over the course of about a week. Common side effects include redness, swelling, or bruising around the injection site. But these issues quickly fade and can be treated with an ice pack.

How Long Do BOTOX Results Last?

BOTOX and other neuromodulators produce results that typically last 3 to 4 months or longer. Studies have shown that individuals who have regularly scheduled neuromodulator injections enjoy longer-lasting results over time.

How Are BOTOX, Dysport, XEOMIN, and Jeuveau Different?

BOTOX, Dysport, XEOMIN, and Jeuveau are all neuromodulators derived from botulinum. There are subtle differences in each of their formulations, so one may suit your needs better than another. No two patients are exactly alike, so choosing between BOTOX, Dysport, XEOMIN, and Jeuveau is a very nuanced decision. Our experienced injectors will help guide you towards an option that can best achieve your aesthetic goals.

Can BOTOX Be Combined With Other Treatments?

Combining BOTOX with other treatments produces enhanced results that wouldn’t be possible with BOTOX injections alone. Patients who want to improve the texture or tone of their skin may opt to combine BOTOX injections with laser skin resurfacing or microneedling. Another popular combination is BOTOX with dermal fillers, a technique often called a “liquid facelift.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BOTOX safe?

BOTOX has an excellent track record for safety. It was first approved by the FDA for cosmetic use more than 20 years ago and serious side effects have been extremely rare.

What’s the best age to start getting BOTOX injections?

There is no single “best age” to schedule your first BOTOX injections. Many women and men start getting BOTOX when they notice early signs of aging, such as crow’s feet or worry lines between the eyes. This typically occurs in your early to mid-30s. More people in their late 20s, however, are coming in for “preventative BOTOX” injections.

Can BOTOX really help prevent wrinkles?

Because BOTOX works by temporarily limiting the movement of muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles—such as those that develop after years of squinting, smiling, or frowning—getting injections earlier can help postpone the onset of certain wrinkles and lines. Facial aging continues, though, and inevitably people develop wrinkles.

How painful are BOTOX treatments?

BOTOX injections are often made in sensitive areas, so applying a topical anesthetic before the treatment greatly minimizes any discomfort for patients.

Is there anything I should avoid after treatment?

Even though there is no recovery following BOTOX injections, there are a few things you should avoid in the first 24 to 48 hours after your appointment. These include rubbing the injection site or sites, strenuous exercise, alcohol and caffeine, extended sun exposure, and blood-thinning medication.

If you want a nonsurgical way to rejuvenate your face, BOTOX and other injectable treatments are an excellent option. To schedule an appointment, call (713) 791-9966 or request a consultation online to speak with one of our experienced injectors at a location near you.
